Engaging in Meaningful Dialogue
Dear Parents,
Our class has been actively engaged in a number of special numeracy units. Below are a few games to reinforce some of the key mathematical concepts taught this term. Please take some time to play these games with your child, and, most importantly, engage in conversations about what they are learning in the classroom. Educational research shows that it is helpful to start conversations with a specific question or an open-ended statement in mind. Here are a few conversation starters to encourage meaningful dialogue between you and your child:
-What does it mean to measure?
-Tell me about measurement?
-How do you solve a problem like that?
-What kind of mathematical strategies are helpful?
-What do you do when you don't know how to solve a problem?
-Why do people measure things?
-When do we use measurement at home or out in our community?

Mike's Critters
To launch our study on "The Needs of Living Things", our class had a very special presentation from "Mike's Critters." Students discussed the characteristics, behaviours and interesting features and facts of a variety of insects and arachnids. In addition, they were able to observe, examine, and many times, feel these amazing critters! Take a look at the unbelievable photos below! What courageous brave children you have!

LANGUAGE ARTS GAMES
We've been concentrating on beginning and ending consonant blends in Language Arts. In addition to the activities, games and paper and pencil work in class, I have added a few on-line games that will reinforce the concepts we have been practising at school. Have fun! Also, this week we completed an integrated Language Arts/Art project called "Blend Blossoms" in which students worked in partners to create a blossom that contained words and a tongue twister using a blend. Please stay posted for pictures of our beautiful blossoms!
