Engaging in Meaningful Dialogue

Dear Parents,

Our class has been actively engaged in a number of special numeracy units.  Below are a few games to reinforce some of the key mathematical concepts taught this term.  Please take some time to play these games with your child, and, most importantly, engage in conversations about what they are learning in the classroom.  Educational research shows that it is helpful to start conversations with a specific question or an open-ended statement in mind.  Here are a few conversation starters to encourage meaningful dialogue between you and your child:

-What does it mean to measure?
-Tell me about measurement?
-How do you solve a problem like that?
-What kind of mathematical strategies are helpful?
-What do you do when you don't know how to solve a problem?
-Why do people measure things?
-When do we use measurement at home or out in our community?
