Introducing Using Doubles as an Addition Strategy

This week, our class has been working on using doubles facts to enhance our ability to add.  Students listened to a story called Two of Everything by Lily Toy Hong.  In the story, a couple finds a magic pot that produces doubles of anything that is placed inside. We had a lot of fun reacting this tale, by placing classroom objects into a pot and guessing how many would come out. After that, students played a fun partner game with a 12-sided die to reinforce the doubles facts.

Here is an example of our partner game.

Once students had some practise using the doubles facts in a game, they had the opportunity to complete a page in a class book entitled Our Class Doubling Book.  Each student had to think of something to put into a magical pot, and complete an illustration and doubles number sentence to accompany their writing.

Once this book is compiled, each child will have a chance to check it out of our class library to share with his/her family!

"Into the pot went 6 party hats,
and out came 12 party hats".

"Into the pot went 4 cakes,
and out came 8 cakes".

"Into the pot went 3 gumballs,
and out came 6 gumballs".
