Powerful Readers and Writers

Powerful readers make connections with what they read. When we read a story, it reminds us of our own personal life experiences.  By making meaningful connections, we also deepen our understanding of ourselves as readers and human beings. Our class has been practising this skill in a variety of contexts (Reading Power GEAR).

Below, students responded to how connecting to text enhances their ability to comprehend literature:

Children listened to the story "The Rainbow Fish" and had an opportunity to empathize with how the fish was feeling, as well as connect to a time that they felt the same way.

"I understand how Rainbow Fish felt when he was delighted because I
was playing with my brother and felt the same way."

"I understand how Rainbow Fish felt when he was happy because I play with
my sister and it makes me happy."
